2023 STELLA ALPINA

8,9,10 settembre 2023 RIEVOCAZIONE STORICA STELLA ALPINA

Bianca’s debut at Stella Alpina

I participated in the thirty-eighth edition of Stella Alpina with a special co-driver: my grand daughter Bianca.

At her very first meeting, Bianca was immediately enthusiastic when I asked her to join me in the three days in the Dolomites, then testing herself with great precision both in reading the road book and in the 70 timed trials.

The rally, which I hadn’t taken part in for years, lived up to the highest expectations: high-level cars (including some very prestigious “older” ones), breathtaking views, superb hospitality, and the comfort of meeting so many young crews, a sign that the combination of oldtimer and “young driver” is possible.

The moment of the awards ceremony saw the presence of the Hon. Matteo Salvini, who expressed his closeness to the world of historic cars and underlined the historical value of collecting.

Thanks to the Scuderia Trentina Storica, to the ASI – in the persons of the president Alberto Scuro, the vice-president Ugo Gambardella and the communication manager Felice Graziani – to Gianni Tesauro, brilliant speaker of the event, and to the Adrenaline 24h team (and thanks also to my Jaguar E Type, a reliable companion on Alpine hairpin bends).

24 May 2022 Coppa della Perugina on Jaguar E Type

24 May 2022

Coppa della Perugina on Jaguar E Type

I have just returned from a weekend full of culture and beauty, spent in Umbria for the Coppa della Perugina.
My second presence at one of the most important Italian vintage car events confirmed my excellent memory of the pre-Covid edition. This time I left the Aston Martin DB6 in the garage, preferring the Jaguar E Type spider, more suited to the sunny weather expected at the weekend.

Around 130 spectacular historic cars from all over Europe were present at the Coppa, including twenty prestigious pre-war cars, and for three days they paraded among the most beautiful villages in the Perugia area, from Paciano to Assisi up to Montefalco, with a stop on Lake Trasimeno included.

Once again we made the engines roar on the track of the Autodromo di Magione and paraded between two wings of the crowd along the elegant Corso Vannucci, the “salotto” of Perugia. Always interesting is the visit to the Perugina, which this year, in addition to the museum, surprisingly included a guided tour inside the factory.

Thanks to my friend Ugo AmodeoCAMEP president, and to all his staff for the impeccable organization of a very pleasant event, which made us leave Perugia with a smile and the promise to meet soon again.

CLUB 8 VOLANTI 60° JAGUAR E TYPE MANTOVA

It was bound to be a success: the event organized by the Club 8Volanti Tazio Nuvolari of Porto Mantovano (MN) during the first weekend of July 2021.

It was an opportunity to celebrate the 60th anniversary of one of the most beautiful cars ever, the Jaguar Type E, a car that, when it was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961, made the great Enzo Ferrari, not always easy to compliment other car manufacturers, say that it was the most beautiful car ever built.

About forty cars were present, including the splendid Type E Coupé that had already appeared in Auto Italiana winter 2021, a Type E Lightweight from Basel owned by the E-Type Register of the Jaguar Driver’s Club Switzerland, another fifteen Type E Coupés and Spiders, several XK 120/140/150 and other dream Jaguars including 2 beautiful MK II 3.8.

Present at the event was the fantastic Jaguar SS 2.5 DHC prototype from 1937, coming from Lugano in Switzerland with other Jaguars and not only by Swiss collectors of the Ticino Group of vintage vehicles.

Among the “other English” cars, a splendid Triumph Italia 2000, an MG A in an unusual Iris Blue, a Morgan and some Triumphs.

There was a large participation of crews who are members of the Scuderia Jaguar Storiche and the Registro Storico Italiano Jaguar, led by Mrs. Colomba.

After meeting in Piazza Sordello in Mantua, a splendid Renaissance living room, the cars set off for a long tour of the Morainic hills of Mantua and then stopped for lunch in Volta Mantovana in the ancient stables of Palazzo Valenti-Gonzaga and in the evening, after a brief return to Mantua, they left for Castel d’Ario, the birthplace of Tazio Nuvolari, where, in a splendid park, the cars were exhibited and dinner was held, unfortunately saddened by a heavy drizzle that did not allow the evening to unfold exactly as planned.

The next day, Sunday, the cars met in Piazza Sordello and then set off for a tour on the roads of Nuvolari, stopping in Castel d’Ario for a greeting from the Mayor, welcomed by the town’s band, and for the final lunch for thanks and greetings with the delivery of a souvenir of the event.

The event was a great success, with foreign guests amazed by the beauty of Mantua, a splendid city perhaps little known.”

“THE ENGLISH ARE COMING” TO MANTOVA WITH AMAMS NUVOLARI

As I said several times, British classic cars have a special place in my heart: it was thanks to an MG, on which I worked at a very young age, that I became passionate about this incredible world.

Therefore, I could not refuse the kind invitation of AMAMS Tazio Nuvolari of Mantua who yesterday, shouting “The English are coming”, brought about fifty shiny British Classic ladies, plus a few valuable youngtimers, to the historic Piazza Sordello.

Together with Giampietro Danini, AMAMS vice president and ASI certification manager, and Attilio Facconi, 1000 Miglia and Nuvolari historian, I spent the morning commenting on the characteristics of the participating cars: splendid examples of MG, Jaguar, Austin Healey, Morgan, Hillman, Rolls Royce, JBA, Triumph, Rover, Jensen.

Special guest, a 1917 AJS 800 sidecar.

We then moved to Marmirolo for a pleasant lunch in the historic Villa Corte Pedron; at the end, the technical jury and the participants awarded some prizes to the cars. The Best in show award went to the 1956 Jensen 541 owned by Max Bottoli, president of MG CAR CLUB Italia, a car of rare elegance and presented in impeccable condition.

The rain that washed down the moment of saying goodbye helped to make the atmosphere even more English, if possible; Thanks to all the AMAMS staff for their warm hospitality and the perfect organization of the day.

23 September 2019 In South Tyrol for the Dolomiti IRA Classic 2019

23 September 2019

In South Tyrol for the Dolomiti IRA Classic 2019

It is always a privilege to participate in the Dolomiti IRA Classic historical cars’ gather of the Veteran Car Team Bolzano.

It will be for the impeccable organization, or for the beauty of the places crossed, or perhaps for the spirit of friendship that animates the participants even during the fifty timed trials.

Be that as it may, I accepted with enthusiasm the invitation of Davide Brancalion, president of the Club, and on the morning of Saturday 21 September I was punctually in Piazza Walther, in the center of Bolzano, for the technical checks of my first series Jaguar E Type.

From Bolzano a journey has begun that has brought about fifty participants’ historic cars – even from northern Germany – to Renon, passing through historic villages and meeting wonderful mountain landscapes, which the perfect weather made even more vivid in colors.

A stop in Terlano, another to Ritter, and here we are in the welcoming Hotel Saslong in Santa Cristina for dinner and overnight stay.

The next morning we reached Monte Pana, a plateau with a view of the Sassolungo and Sassopiatto Dolomite boulders, for the latest regularity tests. The morning ended with a “pasta party” and the awards ceremony.

Brescia-Edolo-Ponte di Legno gather between taste and landscapes with Musical Watch Veteran Car Club

Brescia-Edolo-Ponte di Legno gather between taste and landscapes with Musical Watch Veteran Car Club

From Brescia to the Valle Camonica to the Val di Sole, to descend along Lake Garda: the 11th Edition of Brescia-Edolo-Ponte di Legno of the Musical Watch Veteran Car Club of Brescia did not leave the crews time for boredom. On 15 and 16 June, 35 vintage cars were able to travel on mountain roads, encountering marvelous landscapes, framed by a rarely so clear sky.

The encouraging weather forecast had convinced me to participate in the gather with a spider, my Jaguar E Type. It was the perfect choice: not even a cloud clouded the sky of the two-day period between Brescia and Trento.

On Saturday morning, after the canonical registration at the Mille Miglia Museum, we crossed Franciacorta and flanked Lake Iseo to stop among the evocative Liberty buildings of the Terme di Boario park.

Back in the car, we continued towards Cedegolo for a visit to the Musil, a highly interactive hydropower museum.

We then reached Edolo: amongst a typical lunch, a visit to the Liquorificio Alta Val Camonica (spirits producer)  and regularity tests, the afternoon flew by.

The cars marched along the streets of the village head to Ponte di Legno, where the Jolly Restaurant welcomed us for dinner and awards.

The morning after we left for Carisolo: the blue sky with the view of the Brenta Dolomites made the route priceless, concluded just in time for lunch at the Acetaia Restaurant in Tenno. The patron escorted us to the cellars, where the Trentino balsamic vinegar, the wines and cheeses that we then tasted at the table were produced.

After lunch we said goodbye, thanking the President of the Club, Giovanni Orlandi, assisted by Claudia Sottini and Fabio Delbono, for the perfect organization of the meeting.

BRITISH CAR MEETING AT MUSEO MILLE MIGLIA 2019 JUNE 9th

3 June 2019 ART, VINTAGE AIRCRAFT and CLASSIC CARS with the BRITISH MOTOR CLUB ITALIA

3 June 2019

A BRITISH MOOD ART-AND-FLIGHT DAY

Summer temperatures have blessed on June 2nd the oldtimer English car gather The art in flight, conceived by the British Motor Club Italia.

Fifty flaming British cars among wich my Jaguar E Type roadster moved in the early morning from the Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia to Lake Garda, along quiet country roads – beautiful passage on the ancient Roman bridge that crosses the Chiese river, in the Pontenove locality.

As we reached the village of Carzago, the gates of the MarteS, Sorlini Art Museum, opened to welcome the colorful British snake of cars. Tour guides escorted us to the noble floor of the seventeenth-century palace, telling us about the precious collection of paintings accumulated in the decades by the late entrepreneur Luciano Sorlini. Guided in the fourteen halls, we admired artworks from the Venetian and Brescia masters of the 18th century, among which were paintings by Giovanni Bellini, Pitocchetto, Palma il Vecchio, Tiepolo and Canaletto.

The group then moved to Cantrina village, where we enjoyed local dishes in the welcoming Roccolo farmhouse.

We are then set off again for Ceresara, a Mantuan village known both for its prized cherries and for its frequented Sorlini Airfield. To celebrate Italian Republic Day, a display of WWII airplanes was organized. During the show we met Silvia Sorlini, Luciano’s daughter and guardian of her father’s other great passion, in addition to art: flying.

Sorlini was an experienced pilot, he bought and restored rare examples of war and vintage aircraft, all in perfect working order. Attending to the feats of the pilots on those stunning aircraft was a moment of great emotion, the worthy conclusion of a day that, thanks to art, flight and tasty food, has largely maintained our expectations.

Dolomiti Ira Classic 2018 – Sixth Edition

SATURDAY, September 22, 2018, will see the sixth edition of the “Dolomiti Ira Classic”; skill tests for historic cars registered up to 1997 and registered on the ASI (Italian Historic Automobile Club) calendar as a National Championship event.

Having reached the sixth edition, we would like to repeat the success of previous years by enriching the number of tests and adding a few crews from other countries such as Germany, Austria and the Netherlands to give an international character to this fun race.

But not only that, this year some tests will also take place in Villa di Egna on a city course, closed to traffic. On Sunday, September 23, on the road leading from Santa Cristina Val Gardena to Monte Pana, two kilometers of road will also be closed to traffic for the occasion, with Giuseppe Fornasari, a designer and builder of 600+ horsepower dream cars, as the lead car.

50 special tests with all the flavor of a real historic car regularity race, from the road-book to the large numbers on the car doors, to the official ASI timekeepers, to the race officials of the Karl Kleewein South Tyrol Association, a new panoramic route much appreciated from Terlano through Cornaiano, for a stamp control in the main square of the village to reach, as already mentioned, Egna (one of the most beautiful villages in Italy), which will welcome the historic cars right under its arcades.

As usual, the Municipality of Renon will grant us exclusive use of the Ritten Arena after traveling more than 100 km. It should be noted that at the start in Bolzano in Piazza Walther, the cars will be presented one by one before leaving at 11:00 am for Terlano. In short, the first “low-cost” race registered on the ASI calendar to promote this type of event in the area and to bring young people closer; it will be a great success.

Young students from the “Galileo Galilei School Complex”, formerly ITI, thanks to the help of Principal Rino Arcieri and Professor Angelo Monachella, were able to draft and lay out the Road-Book and participate in the event for free through an interesting school training course.

Therefore, this sixth edition of the “Dolomiti Ira Classic” will be an unmissable event, organized by the Veteran Car Team in collaboration with the Municipality of Bolzano, Santa Cristina, Selva Gardena, and the Tourism Board of Bolzano, Santa Cristina and Selva Gardena on the occasion of the “National Historic Vehicle Day” which will be held on Sunday, September 23 throughout the national territory.
