ASTON MARTIN DB6 1966

c.l. private collection

9 October 2025 Touring Superleggera in the Tuscan Mugello

This autumn as well, I took part in the gathering of the International Touring Superleggera Register, a club I have belonged to for many years and where I have many friends and clients whom I always meet with great affection.
For this event too, I participated with my splendid 1966 Aston Martin DB6 Superleggera, a car I have owned for almost 20 years and that has accompanied me to countless rallies in Italy and abroad.

My daughter Veronica joined me on this occasion, attracted by the extremely interesting cultural and sightseeing program that, as usual, distinguishes the Register’s events thanks to the guidance of its president, Franco Ronchi, always very attentive in selecting the program and caring for every detail.
Thanks to him, to the tireless secretary Alessandra Giorgetti, and to all their closest collaborators, every event is always successful and truly unforgettable.

MY PERSONAL TRAVEL DIARY

When we arrived in Mugello, the landscape immediately gave me that sense of peace only the Tuscan hills can offer. Veronica, as always, enjoyed taking photos of our DB6 as we drove along tree-lined roads. The sound of the six-cylinder engine, on those gentle curves, seemed fuller than usual.

That evening we walked through the center of Borgo San Lorenzo. Even though we were tired, we treated ourselves to a glass of Chianti in a small tavern — one of those simple moments that set the right tone for the whole weekend.

During the visit to the knife-makers of Scarperia, I was struck by the artisans’ mastery. One of them showed me an old decorated knife model from the 1930s; it made me think of my Aston Martin, of materials, of the value of tradition.

On the Passo della Futa, the DB6 performed beautifully. Veronica laughed every time I attacked a curve with a bit more enthusiasm. The landscape, the smell of chestnut trees, the silence of the mountains — everything created a timeless atmosphere.

My favorite moment, however, was at Badia di Moscheta. Pure tranquility. We took half an hour just to walk in the woods beside the abbey, without speaking, simply enjoying nature and the sound of the stream.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

We are pleased to propose a gathering in the Tuscan Mugello.
Scarperia will show us the ancient art of knife-making

4 Ottobre 2023 REGISTRO INTERNAZIONALE TOURING SUPERLEGGERA MEETING MUNICH BAVARIA

The meetings of the Registro Touring Superleggera are a guarantee, and even more so I couldn’t miss the meeting in Bavaria organized by Lukas Menke, a Bavarian member of the Registry as well as a great collector in love with Italy.

About forty Touring Superleggera-bodied cars from the most prestigious brands were taking part in the rally: Maserati, Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and two unusual models, a Sunbeam Alpine and a Hillmann Minx.

I started the engines of the Aston Martin DB6, whose comfort always makes me prefer it on long journeys, to reach Gräfelfing, a village just outside Munich, and on the morning of 5 October I left with the other crews for the first stop, the Castle of Neuschwanstein. I arrived at the home of the eccentric sovereign Ludwig II after a splendid journey along the Romantische Strasse. Lunch in a typical brewery and afternoon visit to the well-known Wies Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The following day is entirely dedicated to the world of BMW: morning in the historic factory, with a visit to the restoration department (the BMW 328 with Touring bodywork, winner of the Mille Miglia in 1940 is notable) and followed by tours of the BMW Museum and the BMW Welt, two futuristic structures that they valorise the past, present and future of the German brand to the extreme. A visit to the factory, with highly technological production departments, could not be missed.

On Saturday 7 October, space will be given to another symbolic German automotive brand, Mercedes Benz, with a visit to HK Engineering, the most important restorer of 300 SL Gullwings and Roadsters. In the afternoon visit to the Buchheim Museum, a venue with bold architecture that combines four different exhibitions (the paintings from the expressionist school are splendid); dinner in the typical Kloster Gasthof of Andechs after a visit to the adjacent church, the oldest pilgrimage site in Bavaria.

The last day, Sunday, opened with the vintage bus transfer to the center of Munich, where the excellent guide Michael involved us in an in-depth guided tour of the city’s many architectural beauties. Stop at the brewery near Marienplatz and again at the hotel, to say goodbye and set off again.

A beautiful, varied and engaging gathering: thanks to Franco Bruno Ronchi, president of the Touring Superleggera Registry, to Alessandra Giorgetti, secretary, and above all to Lukas Menke and his friends, who scrupulously organized our stay in Bavaria.

15 May 2023 COPPA DELLA PERUGINA 2023

In the variegated universe of vintage car meetings, it is nice to find the resistant action of a “hard core” who enhances the world of historic and classic cars. This is the case of CAMEP (Club Auto Moto Epoca Perugino) and its best-known event, the Coppa della Perugina, which I attended last weekend.

The not very encouraging weather forecast convinced me to reach Perugia on board my Aston Martin DB6. Four hundred kilometers traveled without haste, and here I am at the CDP Dealership for the usual welcome. After the briefing, the snake of 104 cars – numerous rare and highly prized specimens – reached the Autodromo dell’Umbria, in Magione. A few laps on the track and return to the city for the Japanese theatrical show in the hermetic Konparu style.

The second day was particularly effervescent, which began with the tour of the Lamborghini Estate, a place to which the founder Ferruccio was very attached, and continued in the direction of Cortona, a splendid village that the guided tour made even more fascinating. Having reached Solomeo, the fiefdom of the entrepreneur Brunello Cucinelli, we visited the Castello di Solomeo winery and dined in the elegant company dining hall.

Saturday in medieval style, with a morning visit to the castle of Solfagnano and Sansepolcro, with its wonderful paintings by Piero della Francesca. During the journey I allowed myself an unscheduled visit to the extraordinary Burri Collection in the former tobacco dryers at Città di Castello. Return to Perugia for the parade in Corso Vannucci, with the colorful touch of the students of the Di Betto Artistic High School dressed in vintage style (during the gala dinner at the castle of Rosciano I also won one of their paintings, which will find space in my Blue Room).

The last day opened with a visit to the Perugina factory and its Chocolate Museum; then, the thirty pre-war participants recalled the historic Coppa della Perugina route. Afterwards, return to Perugia for the static exhibition of the cars in San Francesco al Prato, visit of the Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts and awards of the regularity tests.

It was an intense four days, full of art, beauty, encounters and food and wine delights. A round of applause to CAMEP and its president, Ugo Amodeo, who once again gave us one of the most pleasant and best organized gatherings in Italy.

4 April 2022 In the Langhe with the Touring Superleggera Register

The Spring meeting of the Registro Internazionale Touring Superleggera took us to the Langhe area, Piedmont, last weekend. About fifty historic cars with the famous aluminum body, including my Aston Martin DB6, traveled the streets of the charming Piedmontese villages in search of the treasures of the territory: wine, cheeses, cured meats, hazelnuts, white truffles.
The guided tours to the towns, such as the small Neive and Alba with its underground paths, and to the producers of the best typical products, including the celebrated grappa producer Romano Levi, combined with moments of conviviality in traditional restaurants, made the three days memorable Piedmontese.

8 September 2021 2a COPPA DELLA GARISENDA 2021

Weekend between Emilia and Tuscany for the second edition of the Garisenda Cup, organized by the Bologna Autostoriche Club.

The route made us rediscover suggestive landscapes: after arriving in Loiano, on the Bolognese hills, on Friday evening, we restarted our engines on Saturday to reach Chianti crossing the Raticosa and Futa passes, up to the magical Monteriggioni, where we dined within the walls of the fortress. But the highlight was the next morning, with the arrival in Siena and the passage in Piazza del Campo. Then, guests of the Contrada della Chiocciola, we visited the museum of the same name and had lunch in the headquarters of the Selva, Contrada allied.

Excellent organization, festive and informal atmosphere; convincing the performance of my Aston Martin DB6, which covered over 700 kilometers in less than two days without any effort.

2020 9/11 ottobre QUANDO LA 500 MIGLIA CHIAMA…

2020 October 9-11 WHEN THE 500 MIGLIA CALLS…

“Passion and territory” is the slogan of the 500 Miglia Touring, and there was certainly no shortage of it over the three-day event. Last weekend’s rally brought together 40 cars in Brescia’s central Piazza Vittoria, before taking them to some of the most beautiful places in northeastern Italy.

From the holiday vistas of the Brescia shore of Lake Garda to Riva, and then up to Bolzano and Merano; returning via Ponte di Legno and a stop in Monte Isola; the final awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon in Brescia’s Piazza Paolo VI.

There was plenty of territory, then, and also typical food and wine; but above all, the passion expressed by the participants, who, aboard their beloved classics, plus a few contemporary supercars, accepted patron Giovanni Riva’s invitation to the twenty-first edition of the event.

I couldn’t help myself, and I took my Aston Martin DB6 out of the garage again.

I was able to spend a pleasant weekend revisiting some of my favorite places in the company of friends old and new, who, like me, are addicted to collecting four-wheeled vehicles.

2019 “COPPA DELLA PERUGINA

10 maggio 2019

ASTON MARTIN DB6 – 1966
Chassis: DB6/2720R
Engine: 400/2311 – 4.0 litres
Gearbox: Manual
Interior: Beige Connolly leather
Exterior: Aston Green Metallic

This remarkable 1966 Aston Martin DB6, equipped with the highly sought-after manual gearbox, is one of the most authentic and desirable examples of the British grand tourers of the 1960s. The DB6, direct evolution of the iconic DB4 and DB5, features the celebrated Touring Superleggera bodywork with Superleggera construction, an extended wheelbase, a more spacious cabin and the distinctive aerodynamic Kamm tail, designed to enhance stability and efficiency.

Its engine is the legendary 4.0-litre inline-six, fed by three SU carburettors, offering smooth yet powerful performance. Combined with the manual transmission, it provides an exceptionally engaging driving experience. DB6 models equipped with a manual gearbox constitute a small minority of total production, making this example particularly rare and sought after.
