Description
This magnificent Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider 1600 is an original Italian-delivery car, never imported, retaining its original black Varese license plates. Delivered new in Milan in the spring of 1963, it was sold to its second owner in the Province of Varese in 1966. Ownership changed in 1968, 1983, 1988 and 2000, always remaining within the same area and keeping its original registration.
In 2011 it was acquired by an English lady living in Tuscany, who enjoyed the car with her husband on leisure trips throughout Italy until today.
The car underwent a comprehensive restoration in the past. More recently it received a complete overhaul of the engine, clutch, dashboard instruments and new tyres, documented by invoices and photographs for approximately €9,000. Since then it has covered only about 2,000 km.
All maintenance invoices from the last twelve years are included.
In 2011 the car was certified and registered with the Alfa Romeo Historic Register, confirming its authenticity and originality. It is accompanied by extensive historical documentation, owner’s manuals, spare parts catalogue, restoration photographs and invoices.
The Model
Introduced in 1962 as the successor to the Giulietta Spider, the Giulia Spider retained Pininfarina’s timeless design while introducing Alfa Romeo’s new 1.6-litre all-alloy twin-cam engine producing approximately 92 horsepower.
Technical highlights include:
- All-alloy twin-cam four-cylinder engine
- Five-speed fully synchronized manual gearbox
- Rear-wheel drive
- Front disc brakes
- Alfa Romeo sports suspension
Giulia Spider versus Giulietta Spider
Compared with the Giulietta Spider, the Giulia Spider offers significantly improved performance thanks to its larger 1.6-litre engine, providing more torque, stronger acceleration and higher cruising speeds.
The standard five-speed gearbox is one of its greatest advantages, allowing relaxed motorway driving at lower engine speeds, improved comfort, reduced mechanical noise and lower fuel consumption. Its greater torque also makes overtaking and mountain driving considerably easier.
Many enthusiasts consider the Giulia Spider to be the finest evolution of the classic Alfa Romeo Spider.
Collectability
Produced for only a relatively short period and in substantially lower numbers than the Giulietta Spider, the Giulia Spider 1600 is highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
Original Italian cars retaining their factory registration plates, documented history, Alfa Romeo Historic Register certification and comprehensive maintenance records are increasingly rare and highly desirable.
This example combines originality, documented provenance, excellent mechanical condition and outstanding historical integrity, making it suitable for prestigious collections as well as historic rallies and long-distance touring.
